Why Does My Child Keep Getting Cavities, Even Though We Brush?

“We brush every day! How does my child still have a cavity?”
We hear this question from parents, and we understand the frustration. The process of creating cavities is complicated, and brushing is only one part of the picture.

Where do cavities come from?
Certain bacteria in our mouths use sugars from foods and drinks to make acid. This acid can dissolve enamel, the protective outer layer of teeth. Over time, repeated acid attacks can lead to a cavity. Brushing helps remove plaque, the sticky film of bacteria on teeth. But what happens between brushing sessions matters, too!

Why are some children more prone to cavities?
Every mouth is different. Some children have deeper grooves in their teeth that are harder to clean. Bacteria vary from person to person, and saliva helps wash away food and protect enamel. These differences can make some children more cavity-prone. That does not mean brushing is not helping. Their teeth may simply need extra support.

My child doesn’t eat much candy. What else matters?
Juice, sports drinks, and other sweetened beverages can provide fuel for cavity-causing bacteria. Even “100% juice” contains sugar. Frequency matters, too. Sipping sweet drinks or grazing on snacks throughout the afternoon exposes teeth to repeated acid attacks. Having meals and planned snacks, with plain water in between, gives teeth a break. And don’t forget to floss! Toothbrushes cannot fully clean between teeth that touch. Helping your child clean those spaces daily is an important part of preventing cavities.

What can we do to help?
Keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth daily. Younger children need help reaching all the surfaces. At your child’s appointment, we can review their routine and identify areas needing extra attention. We may also discuss fluoride treatments or sealants for additional protection.

Our team talks through these habits with parents and patients at every appointment. Come see us to learn how we can work together to keep your child’s smile healthy!
