New Year, New Toothpaste: What Kind of Toothpaste Should My Child Be Using?

Walking down the toothpaste aisle can feel overwhelming for parents. With so many options available, choosing the right one for your child does not have to be complicated.

Look for the ADA Seal of Approval
The most important thing to look for when choosing a toothpaste is the ADA (American Dental Association) Seal of Approval. Toothpastes with this seal have been carefully tested to make sure they do not contain harsh abrasives or unsafe ingredients and are safe for everyday use.

The ADA seal is granted for five years and products are retested before approval is renewed. Brand names, flavors, colors, and packaging are largely marketing tools. If a toothpaste has the ADA seal, it is a safe and effective choice for children.

When Should My Child Use Fluoride Toothpaste?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends using a small amount of fluoride toothpaste as soon as a child’s first teeth erupt, which typically happens around six months of age.

  • For children under age three, use a tiny smear about the size of a grain of rice

  • For children age three and older, increase to a pea-sized amount once they can consistently spit out toothpaste after brushing

The Importance of Parental Help
Young children do not yet have the coordination to brush their teeth thoroughly on their own. Parents should assist with brushing and supervise daily until children are able to brush effectively. Parental involvement plays a key role in keeping smiles healthy as kids grow.
